Dreamy Guitar Solo (Blues, Americana) in Am

Funny how music serves as a counterweight. When my life’s busy, I write smooth, slow-burn solos like this one. A Blues Americana guitar solo in A minor, influenced by Mark Knopfler’s playing. Enjoy!

About This Solo

I wrote this minor blues track to express a recurring feeling I experience in Autumn, a feeling of quiet gloom, best felt when talking a walk into the colorful woods this time of the year.

The solo is heavily influenced by Mark Knopfler’s playing. A clean, spacious guitar sound with emphasis on right hand dynamics, the A minor pentatonic and the odd blue note (Eb).I love these slow-burning blues-country-roots licks that you’ll find in Mark Knopfler’s more recent work.

Featured concepts

Expanding on this playing style, I play a few unusual double stops with major second intervals. These are somewhat uncommon on guitar and carry a soft and glassy dissonance that supports the mood here. You’ll notice I create these by letting adjacent strings to ‘ring’ out.

Harmonic Minor Lick
A harmonic minor

Finally, I bring out the colors of the harmonic minor scale in bar 13 (the ‘lazy’ pickup). I like the somber tone of this scale. Venturing into this sound often brings me to diminished triads (look for them in the outro!). The inspiration for these harmonic minor guitar licks comes from listening to gypsy swing artists like Django Reinhardt and Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies).

I hope you enjoy this solo. It feels like something new for this channel. Sometimes making these videos can be really hard work. But for this video, it felt more like surfing on a creative ‘flow’, less strenuous and without (over)thinking too much. Although there must be a bit of suffering in creating art, it’s better when it’s not too much 😉 Let’s see where this mindset brings me in the future.

Classic Rock Guitar Solo in G

Classic, Uplifting Rock Guitar Solo in G, played on a Gibson Les Paul. Enjoy!

About This Solo

I turned out to be somewhat of a challenge to write a new solo for my latest jam track, but after a few improvised takes, I played this classic rock solo in the key of G. It is very much blues-inspired with a lot of minor pentatonic licks, blues licks, and rhythmic rock guitar licks. The melodic chorus is opened and ended with tasty unison bends in the 15th position As usual, you get the guitar tabs on the screen.

Featured Lick
Classic Rock Lick in G

The lick in bars 23 to 25 is a classic blues rock lick that stems from the G minor blues scale. Bend the 13th fret on the B-string a full step up, hit the 13th fret on the E-string and alternate between those 2 strings. In the video, you can see I play this with hybrid picking.  If you listen to blues, you’ll undoubtedly recognize this lick (it is often played on a blues harmonica!). Hold the bend on the B-string, and gradually release over the course of the next bar. This creates a cool, dynamic effect, fun to play and a real headturner! This lick is transposable to any key, so it fits into any classic rock solo!

80s TV-theme style guitar solo

Enjoy this 80s-TV-Themed Guitar Solo, featuring synths, palm trees, all the wrong colors and some fun guitar licks!  Solo played on my Suhr Modern Pro HH.

About This Solo

I was born in the 80s, so that might explain my fascination for 80s music (that and playing too much GTA Vice City back in the day). This 80s guitar solo is played over a retro-themed rock backing track in the key of A minor. The track opens with a classic Moog-synth pattern (Arturia Mini V), that inspired me to play long notes, and gradually build up a more melodic solo with some classic 80s guitar spice. The solo is mostly A minor & A minor pentatonic

Septuplets
Septuplets

To paraphrase Bob Ross, this guitar lick was a ‘happy accident’ during improv. This legato lick has 2 septuplets patterns (beats 1 & 2), before sinking into the groove of the song again.

Surf Guitar Instrumental & Solo in E minor

Original SURF guitar instrumental and solo I wrote, called ‘El Camarón’ (The Shrimp), inspired by an imaginary shrimp super-hero and its quirky adventures in the beach sand 🙂 Aside from this sunny backstory, the track is inspired by the surf hits of Dick Dale, Hank Marvin (The Shadows) and others! Download the TABS (pdf) here:

About the solo

This uplifting, instrumental surf song is in the key of E minor. The song is inspired by surf instrumental classics from Dick Dale, Hank Marvin (The Shadows) The Ventures, and other surf instrumental bands. The track has a repeating motif with a clear Tex-Mex sound to it. I love this blend of Latin, Spanish and Exotic riffs in Surf Music. This is really fun to play for guitarists.-
