Blues Shuffle Solo °1 in E(+Tab)

Blues solo in the key of E, with some licks in the style of the great Josh Smith. Guitar tabs (Free pdf) and video below.

About the video

In this short clip I’ll play an (improvised) blues guitar solo on my Fender Stratocaster, in the style of Josh Smith – at least a very humble attempt to play some of his amazing licks and ideas 🙂 When I take some inspiration from another guitar player, I try not to copy the licks exactly, but to work them into my own guitar playing. This 12-bar guitar solo is played in E major. The solo is mostly played in E major pentatonic, E major blues, E minor bluesHave fun with this texas-blues-style video and tab!

Rollin’ & Tumblin’ Live Solo

Here’s a live, improvised guitar solo for the blues classic Rollin’ & Tumblin (an encore). We played Nieuwpoort Winter Village this weekend with Ann Lee blues, and it was the first time we did a gig in the middle of an ice rink. Quite the experience! There is no transcription for this solo at the moment, as I’m busy workin’ on a video tutorial for the A minor blues solo I posted a few weeks ago. Stay tuned!

Slow Blues Rock Solo (Am)

Slow blues guitar solo in A minor, with David Gilmour influences.

About this slow blues

This solo was improvised over one of my blues backing tracks, called Turning Tides Blues. It’s a track with a 12-8 meter, creating a haunting electric blues feel. This blues style is inspired by BB. King, Peter Green, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, and others.

I feel like there are not enough blues backing tracks in 12/8-time on the net, so I decided to do my take on it. The solo is mostly in A minor pentatonic. Notice how putting the longer notes on the first beat & the licks on the 4th help to push the beat forward. This tasty, modern electric blues solo is played on my Suhr Modern guitar, through the Fractal AX8.

Jump Blues (+ Tab)

Jump Blues improvisation in the key of C, inspired by the playing of JP Soars, Chuck Berry (and even Josh Smith). Have fun with this guitar solo!

I filmed a jump blues solo improvisation this week and decided it would be a good idea to tab it out ! There are a lot ideas going on here, but the main inspiration comes from seeing JP Soars live a few years ago. He’s a great guitarist and plays these swingin’ blues licks on his ES-335 in a masterful way. Have fun with this ‘bag of licks’ (or tricks), inspired by JP Soars, but also B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Josh Smith & others. (Note: i made a small correction in bar 20)
